 Illuminating Moments by Martim Monica
‘We grow, we change but we always leave traces behind us.’

Collages taken from Martim’s blog

pop.see.cul : Can you briefly describe yourself?

Martim Monica : I’m a Master student at London College of Communication and I’m, at the same time, interning at Unruly Media as a designer. I’m portuguese; I have a guilty pleasure for japanese music (yes, I’m a geek); I have a blog;  I hate the sound of apples being bitten and I’m loving my new life in London.

pop.see.cul : What was your inspiration for this short film ?

Martim Monica : One of my inspirations for this was “Pina”, the tribute movie by Wim Wenders. I was never a fan of contemporary dance but after watching the film, I realized how beautiful and effective it can be when it comes to transmit emotions and to tell a story.

pop.see.cul : Will you be taking this idea further?

Martim Monica : I eventually would like to develop this concept as an interactive performance. My (rough) idea is that in the end, the audience can have a direct input in the performance, choosing which frames they want to capture and to project on the stage. I’m giving the power to visually trace the Past on to the Present.

pop.see.cul :  Where did you film your movie and why?

Martim Monica : I filmed this under a viaduct (I don’t know if this is the correct english word) in Shoreditch. Since the first time I saw the place, I told myself I would shoot something there. I loved its greatness, its contrasts and the fact that it was such a huge place with no one there, which is understandable because it had a locked gate. Me and Maria (the dancer) had to literally roll under the gate and run so no one could see us.

pop.see.cul : How would you describe your style in general?

Martim Monica : My work always had a very cartoonish style but I think it’s changing as I’m learning a lot more about design in general. I’m also very interested in exploring different video techniques so my short films have been pretty experimental.

Milano Moda Uomo is a spectacular international event showing ready-to-wear collections and accessories for men by cutting-edge
designers from Italian fashion industry. Milan, this weekend, was the place to be. The city was full of journalists, bloggers, designers, manufacturers, agents and fashion followers. There were several exhibitions and events to create a global platform for its industry players. Via Monte Napoleone was full of people looking at the high-end boutiques and more than hundreds of people were queuing infront of La Rinascente to get David Gandy’s autograph, who was promoting his latest book for Dolce and Gabanna. In the Marc Jacobs store, they held an event where they presented the new short movies for the brand, while people enjoyed their ‘aperativo’s. The city was just full of colour and life.

Little Bandits

“Every collection has a story. We love to reference things like religious cults, 80’s pop bands, tennis clubs and motocross culture. The worlds we live in – and don’t live in, but are fascinated by – give us our inspirations.”
